For a long time I did not dare to write this post. It’s still hard for me to remember how and why I lost my hair and the events that accompany it. But right now, when many are at risk of finding themselves in a similar situation due to the spreading virus, I decided it was worth sharing the sad experience. I hope none of you use it.
Two years ago, as a result of an accident, I ended up in a hospital and spent three months in a medical coma on a ventilator , plus another month in my mind, but also on forced ventilation of the lungs. When a person wakes up after a coma, everything happens not at all like in a movie. Actors quickly get out of bed and begin to run and kill enemies in batches almost on the day of awakening (thanks to the movie "Kill Bill" for the illusions). In life, everything is different. All body resources are used to preserve the most important organs, the rest is secondary. When I woke up, I could not speak, I was not able to even lift a finger. The recovery process was terrible, I had to re-learn everything through terrible pain. It took almost a year.
Of course, everyone was not up to my hair. Yes, and I myself realized that I would not be left without them very soon, because there are no mirrors in the intensive care unit, and I could not move. The option to reach the head with your hand and check what was left there was not available.
As I understood later, the cause of hair loss was medication and stress. Its reasons are obvious. But not only ... At the very beginning, when the situation was critical, no one guessed to collect hair in a ponytail or braid. As a result, my thin soft hair tangled up in a ball that was simply impossible to comb. Perhaps a good oil and balm would help. When you lie in intensive care, you wash your hair once a week, comb them to the best of your ability, even do manicures (in any case, in England). But they wash it with such shampoo, and comb it with such an ugly scallop that it would be better not to touch it. Attempts by nurses to comb the tangled hair cost me half an already heaped mane.
A simple hair elastic would save my hair, reduce the scale of losses for sure. Therefore, my first and most important advice: tell your husband, parents or close friend that if you, God forbid, find yourself in a hospital and will not be able to care for your hair, you need to put it in a tail, and it’s better to braid it in braid. If possible, let someone close to wash and comb them as carefully and carefully as possible.
I will demonstrate the scale of the disaster:
So it was a couple of weeks before. I did not cut my hair for almost 6 months, I was just about to cut the ends and even managed to do it. The hair is far from in perfect condition, but it definitely is.
Six months later, when I came to my senses and could at least sit. The first time I saw myself in the mirror was a huge shock:
Scalp is very irritated
So, finally realizing that I had lost almost all my hair and reconciled with this fact, I actively took up their restoration with the help of relatives and doctors. The plan was simple:
Find out what vitamins and minerals the body lacks and make up for their shortage. In fact, after a long coma, everything is missing. In my case, vitamin B, iron, vitamin D turned out to be critical for hair.
Cleanse the scalp of all the muck that accumulated over the months without a normal wash. Still, it is not easy to wash an immobile patient, it is in bed, not in the shower ... in general, the scalp even looked creepy.
Stop hair fall. My hair fell disastrously, since I still couldn’t comb my hair myself, they were hiding a comb from me, but I already saw that a catastrophe was happening. True, against the background of everything else, it was still not important.
Normalize the condition of the scalp and, if possible, moisturize the hair. The patient in a coma is given a minimum of fluid through a special tube, this is enough for life, but not enough for the normal condition of dry skin and dry hair. The skin literally fell in flakes, the hair broke ...
Here on these points and go.
I had to start with a radical haircut. It was difficult to decide on such a step, the last time I seriously cut the length of my hair at school, since then only trimming the ends. But there was nothing to save. As a result, in November 2018, I became the owner of a hedgehog with bald spots and began to slowly restore hair, and also learn to live anew.
Hair health inside out.
While lying in the hospital, I did not have the opportunity to contact a trichologist. But I did millions of analyzes, I had to look for the right thing in them and become a specialist in vitamins and minerals. But if possible, it is better to contact a professional.
For hair are of great importance:
A sufficient amount of protein and amino acids. It is important to normalize nutrition or take protein additionally. The minimum recommended NHS Uk is 0.8 grams per kg of weight for a healthy person. To find out if you consume enough protein, you can use simple calculations by analyzing the composition of the products. There are many mobile applications for this, the most convenient allow you to simply scan the barcode of products. But! Consuming is not enough, it is important to know how much is absorbed. Only a blood test will help here.
Vitamins of group B. B5 (pantothenic acid) is needed for hair growth, it affects the growth rate, regeneration and skin health. Vitamin B3 (PP or nicotinic acid) improves metabolic processes. It can be used externally, it is part of many remedies for hair loss and accelerate hair growth. Vitamin B6 is needed to improve texture, strengthen hair. All of these vitamins can be taken separately or in combination. You can find out which one is missing by symptoms or by passing a blood test;
Vitamin E improves blood circulation, is considered a vitamin of beauty, is useful for hair, and for nails, and for skin;
Often forget about vitamin D (calciferol) which in the north of Europe and almost throughout Russia is lacking in almost everyone. Its deficiency in the body leads to accelerated hair loss.
Perhaps you are missing just one building brick for hair beauty. So with a strong loss, I highly recommend starting with this point. Sometimes it’s enough just to normalize your diet.
Bringing the scalp in good condition
I’ll say banality: hair grows from the scalp, follicles actually live in the skin. If there are problems with her condition, there may be problems with hair.
Due to dust and dirty air, styling products, sweat, secretions of sebaceous glands and dead cells, the scalp needs to be thoroughly cleaned. In normal condition, regular washing with a suitable shampoo is sufficient. But if the hair falls out too actively, it is important to pay attention to the skin. Dandruff, irritation on the skin - all this can be a signal of imbalance.
After six months without a normal shower (no, I was not dirty, my skin was very clean, but the “bath” in this case was special napkins and quite a bit of water, everything happens in bed. After washing, the bed is over) my scalp looked awful . I had to make serious efforts to clean it from dead cells. I was afraid to use peelings, so I started with scrubs.
Once upon a time I had a scrub from Natur Siberik: Oblepikha Siberica Professional a sea-buckthorn scrub for the scalp , which I remembered first of all. A good tool, but from thin, easily tangled hair can create an even larger nest. The scrubbing particles stuck in my hair, when combed, the hair was torn and fell even more.
Thin fragile hair is more suitable for melting scrubs with water-soluble particles. For a while I used homemade scrubs with a very simple recipe: 1 teaspoon of salt should be added to 1 tablespoon of hair balm. The intensity of exfoliation depends on the size of the grains of salt. When the salt has dissolved, just rinse your head with ordinary shampoo.
Important: salt dries hair, so care must be taken to thoroughly moisturize.
This elementary and almost free option helped me get rid of dead skin scales and pollution. But my overdried because of the long inability to drink normally and many medications, my hair from salt became even more fragile. I had to look for a reasonable alternative.
Slightly better went salt in oil. I liked the mixture of argan and olive oil. But from oil, hair also needs to be washed ... I had to use ready-made options. They are more convenient and comfortable.
I turned to my beloved Kerastase, they just got a line of scrubs. Kerastase Scrub Energisant pleasantly surprised me. It is also made on the basis of salt, but the particles are very small, the skin is not completely injured. In addition, salicylic acid is in the composition, so that mechanical exfoliation is combined with chemical exfoliation. It seems that the products are excellent, if anyone used, tell me. I did not have time to get to know him, as I discovered a brand that overshadowed Kerastaz in my eyes.
It was in her that I found the perfect hair scrub: Christophe Robin Cleansing Purifying Scrub with Sea Salt.
I’ll definitely tell you about the entire line separately, it deserves it. The scrub is absolutely magical, with some incredible delicate, airy texture.
In the oil base, the smallest salt crystals that melt in about 30-45 seconds of a light massage, after which the scrub foams with a plentiful cap and perfectly rinses the hair.
It was with this scrub that I first felt what “scalp breathes” means. In addition, it is not required to use shampoo after scrub, but it is advisable to apply a moisturizing mask. He does not dry his scalp completely, even moisturizes it rather. The hair after it is voluminous, clean, but the tips are still slightly dry.
The scrub consumption is minimal. Half a teaspoon is enough to cleanse the skin and rinse your hair. The manufacturer recommends using 1 time per week. The scrub is presented in 2 volumes: 200 and 75 milliliters. I recommend the second option, such a jar is enough for six months - that’s exactly the expiration date after opening.
So far, I have not tried anything better. Minus, like with most of these tools - the price.
If you look at the composition, it will become clear that, despite all my enthusiasm, it is still the same salt in oils, plus a soap agent. In fact, almost the same scrub can be prepared independently. But tactile sensations with homemade scrubs are incomparable. Moreover, it foams!
There are also special deep cleaning shampoos, but they are more aimed at removing silicones that have accumulated on the hair and skin. I needed to cleanse the scalp of dead cells, secretions of the sebaceous glands and other things. Chemical peels would be more suitable, but because of drugs that increase photosensitivity, I was afraid to use them, so as not to get age spots on the scalp.
Stop hair loss
I already had experience recovering hair after a serious illness, so I knew about where to start:
Apparently, I was a big Kerastase fan a couple of years ago. And although last time everything was one tenth not as bad as after a coma, the past experience was very useful to me.
The Kerastase specifique line is designed to solve problems with hair and scalp. For starters, I took a shampoo and spray, and left the ampoules for later. This turned out to be a very correct decision, since the ampoules specifique stimuliste (red label) caused me a lot of itching).
I stopped the hair loss with the help of an excellent spray from Kerastase Specifique Stimuliste Hair Thickener, which previously helped me with seasonal and associated with the use of some drugs hair fall. The result is noticeable after a week: there is less hair loss. I applied the spray every day on partings, then did a gentle massage with my fingertips.
Thanks to a convenient spray, the spray is easy to apply close to the skin, so that it does not get on the hair. Does not contaminate the scalp, does not cause itching. Sometimes a slight tingling sensation was felt for the first few minutes, but then it passed.
The main active ingredients: aminexil, a complex of vitamins, including B vitamins necessary for hair, arginine (an amino acid that makes follicles rejuvenate) perfectly fulfill the task - they stop the loss of existing hair and stimulate the growth of new ones. Three weeks later, I saw the first fluffy hair all over my head.
A very serious minus of the spray is the price. But one bottle is enough for 3 courses of one month. I didn’t notice the addiction, although I have been using this spray with seasonal hair fall for already 5 years. There is no cancellation effect either, although many are afraid of this and refuse funds with aminexil. It was after a coma that I used it for 2 months every day, then took a break for a month and continued for another month.
The composition contains alcohol, which provides the best penetration of ingredients into the skin, in this case this is necessary due to the peculiarities of the mechanism of action. The skin does not dry and does not irritate even with prolonged use.
In a pair for spray I had a shampoo bath Kerastase Specifique Bain Prévention Shampoo . It gently cleanses fragile hair, gives a lot of foam. I can not call it a necessity, unlike a spray. I think it can be replaced with any mild shampoo.
Like all Kerastase shampoos, it foams abundantly and has a minimum consumption. One bottle is enough for 3 months of daily washing. You can read more about my impressions here .
Moisturizing and basic care for regrowing hair.
When the bald hedgehog began to turn into a neat little porcupine, I stopped using the ruler against hair loss and allowed myself some experiments. At that moment, I most wanted to give volume to rare hair to hide the existing bald patches. Unfortunately, sometimes this led to errors.
The fact is that my body for a long time experienced a lack of moisture. As a result, the skin and hair were extremely dry. And the volume boosters dried them even more. There were many unsuccessful products, but there were also decent ones that could become a compromise between the desired volume and the necessary hydration.
For example, a shampoo from TIGI BED HEAD from the Fully Loaded Massive Volume Shampoo line (post) did a good job.
The shampoo smells wonderful sweet strawberry chewing gum, foam abundantly, but does not give the promised volume to dry thin hair. Due to the rather liquid consistency, it is quickly consumed. I did not have a desire to repeat it, but rather because even the regrowing hair remained very very dry and needed other care.
An excellent impression was made by the paste for Christophe Robin hair volume cleansing volumizing paste with pure rassoul clay and rose extracts.
I received a small jar of this miracle remedy as a gift, and my love for a brand that likes to surprise with unusual products began with it: black paste for washing hair, a melting mask, a foaming scrub. Unless the shampoo was without special effects.
Opening the jar, I suspected that the product had deteriorated. If it were not for the wonderful aroma, I would have thrown out this strange mud-like clay without any doubt. But good reviews spurred curiosity, I ventured to try and never regretted.
The consistency of the paste resembles healing mud with small grains. Pretty thick, you need to remove it with a spatula. When applied to wet hair, it does not dissolve immediately, after a gentle massage in 10-15 seconds gives a plentiful foam. The sensations are very pleasant.
The paste perfectly rinses the hair, gives it such a missing volume. If usually I wash my hair every other day, then after washing with paste the ponies remain clean for two days. In fact, it is a scrub shampoo that provides deep cleansing. After the first application, I could not stop touching the hair - they were so magnificent. This despite the fact that I would not call my hair “lush” even before this story.
The pasta has a floral aroma with a touch of rose. Minimum consumption: a quarter teaspoon is required on the hair to the shoulders. I usually soap my hair twice, but one is enough with the paste. I had a small jar, it was enough for more than 6 months of use once a week. It seems to me that it is almost impossible to expend the full-size version of 250 ml for the allotted 6 months after opening the manufacturer.
It is almost impossible to praise this tool. There is only one thing: clay in the composition slightly dries the hair. That is why I only use pasta once a week. But a good moisturizing mask will save the situation.
I didn’t like the Joyko K-Pak products at all. The procedure for their consistent application was too difficult, because there was still not enough strength to stand. In addition, they weighted very thin sparse hair, concealing the already short-cut volume. It was even worse with funds from Aleran, Salerm, Sulvasu and other hits. Almost all remedies turned my hair into icicles.
Having finished experimenting and leaving only paste from Christoph Robin in a constant arsenal, I returned to already familiar means.
I liked Kerastase Volumifique's volume line more than any other similar product.
Shampoo-bath Kérastase Resistance Volumifique Bain rinses hair well, does not dry and does not make it heavier. The ideal middle ground between needs and desires at that time. Like all shampoos of this type, it has a thick consistency, foam abundantly, rinses hair well with 2 times. Consumption is slow, 250 ml bottles are enough for about 3 months of use every other day.
Shampoo has a pleasant fresh aroma, does not tangle hair. My thin and soft hair can be combed without any problems even without conditioner.
Jelly was sold paired with shampoo to add volume to Kérastase Resistance Volumifique Gelee hair . I was seduced by this unusual product, but it did not cause enthusiasm.
A very thick, drop-shaped jelly is easily distributed throughout the hair and makes it friable. Combing hair after him is a pleasure.
A soft tube that can be placed on the screw cap allows you to conveniently dispense the product. The fragrance, like that of a shampoo from the same line, is gentle and fresh, does not linger on the hair.
It is best to apply jelly on the hair slightly dried with a towel, on the lower third. I held for 2-3 minutes and washed off. If you hold it longer, the jelly hardens, the hair “seizes” and it becomes more difficult to wash it off.
The problem turned out to be that my thin hair looked washed out, it was worth a little bit to go too far with the amount. But if you use a pea, the softening effect almost disappeared and the hair did not comb well. In the end, I adapted to accurately dose the jelly. Now the tube is over and I will not repeat it.
It is possible that normal hair will like this product much more. But for thin and damaged jellies is not quite suitable.

Finally, I realized that at this stage my hair needs not volume, but hydration and nutrition. From this day, the life of my hair began to improve a little.
My favorite revitalizing mask is again from Kerastase, this time the Nutritive line. But the Kérastase Nutritive Masquintense, which I used to use with pleasure, makes the hair heavier, giving it a well-groomed look and nourishing it from the inside. With sufficient density, I liked this effect. But ... I had to choose a product easier.
Kérastase Nutritive Lait Vital is a nourishing hair balm.
Its main advantage in my case is that it does not weigh down the hair at all, it is not possible to overdo it. My dry porous hair absorbs it without a trace.
I apply generously to the hair wrung out with a towel, retreating literally half a centimeter from the roots, hold for 3-5 minutes and rinse off.
The balm has a double effect: it softens the hair, envelops it with a silicone film, making it a little thicker and creates the effect of nourishment from the inside, and also makes it friable, making it easier to comb. The ends with him split less even without special care.
Shampoo and Christophe Robin mask with aloe vera in the composition provide deep hydration to my hair.
A star stylist who worked with French movie stars and supermodels created a brand with a special philosophy. I will not go into details, the post and so it turned out very long. I can only say that the moisturizing product line for hair Christoph Robin significantly improved the condition of my hair.
I'll start with shampoo. Christophe Robin Hydrating Shampoo with Aloe Vera is very liquid, which causes a lot of inconvenience. He strives to escape from the palm of his hand, which increases consumption.
A bottle of very dense plastic, the standard lid for shampoos, opens by pressing, after use it is recessed inside. In general, the packaging is the simplest, but laconic-stylish.
The shampoo is medium-foaming, it rinses the hair well the first time, but I often apply two to wash off oils and silicones. The main advantage of this shampoo is the incredible gentleness of cleansing. He completely, absolutely and in no way dries his hair. Doesn't moisturize, of course, either. Still, this is a product that is on the hair very briefly.
Shampoo is self-sufficient and does not require a mandatory balm or mask. The hair after it is soft, obedient and alive from the inside. I have never seen such an effect before. I had always tried to nourish my hair, smooth it out, but it turned out they needed hydration.
As in the case of Kerastaz shampoos, I can’t call this product a mast hell. But I haven’t seen others so moisturizing shampoos. So, despite the high cost and not too economical expense, I have been using it for 7 months now, alternating with the shampoo of the same brand for deep cleansing and paste with Rasul clay, also from Christoph Robin, when I really want volume.
The main character of the story with moisturizing and bringing my hair back to life: Christophe Robin Hydrating Melting Mask With Aloe Vera.
The mask is very light, my hair is absorbed almost instantly. The texture of the liquid fluid, which is not very convenient: the mask quickly flows out of the tube, caution is required. With packaging, a miss again. The soft tube, which is so convenient to put on the lid, has a too wide neck for such a fluid product. In general, the thoughtfulness of packaging is not the brand’s strong point, but the care properties of the products are on top.
All packaging flaws are overshadowed by the result. I apply the mask to clean, slightly wrung out hair towel over the entire length, retreating half a centimeter from the roots, it very quickly disappears, soaking into the hair. I have enough about a teaspoon to shoulder length. It is enough to hold the mask on your hair for 2-3 minutes and rinse with warm water to get moisturized, elastic, not heavy, but obedient and perfectly combed hair.
It even feels to the touch that the hair is lively, not rough, not brittle. For me, such a result is a miracle worth paying for.
In addition to moisturizing and nourishing masks, I like oil masks. My dry porous hair really likes it. Even during the experiments with oil scrubs, I noticed that olive oil gives my hair elasticity, coconut dries slightly, grape seed oil gives shine. I love and use all of them.
But most often I make masks with argan oil. It makes hair vibrant, shiny and promotes the regeneration of the scalp.
My first argan oil was Neal's Yard Remedies Organic Argan Oil.
Unfortunately, I only have this sad photo from the hospital, which does not even closely reflect the beauty of an elegant bottle of blue glass.
I applied a little warmed oil to the roots and the entire length of the hair. When the scalp returned to normal, began to mix this oil with olive oil and apply only to the length and tips before washing. She put on a shower cap, sometimes wrapped it in a towel or a warm scarf and left it for 2-3 hours. I tried to do at least 1 time per week.
Such an oil mask is not washed off, it is required to soap the hair 2-3 times. But the hair after it is shiny, elastic, less brittle.
Rating: 10 out of 10;
Testing period: about 6 months;
Cost: £ 19 for 50 ml.
As part of only Argania spinosa (Argan) kernel oil.
Now that my hair is less in need of enveloping oil “baths”, I switched to a more convenient argan oil from Pure argan co 100% Argan oil.
Natural oil from Morocco purchased in accordance with the rules of Fair trade, is not tested on animals (plus a bunny with karma). Very convenient packaging with a pipette allows you to conveniently dispense oil.
I put it on the scalp along the partings, and the length before washing. Sometimes I can apply wet hair to the ends, but still I prefer silicones to combat split ends.
Cost: £ 20 per 100 ml;
Testing period: 3 months.
And finally, we got to the end of the post and the ends of the hair. Hope someone else is with me.
The well-known Marocanoil helps me to keep my hair tips in good condition, which was so much written about at the Beautician that I won’t lengthen the risk of becoming an endless post.
Also in my care there are two good masks that are applied before washing your hair. But I started using them relatively recently and they have no relation to the history of hair restoration.
That’s probably all. The story is very long. I hope that such an extreme experience will never be useful to anyone. But the remedies presented in the post can help in other situations when the hair needs careful care and restoration.
At the end of my story I will show my hair now, a year and a half later. Their condition is very far from ideal, their hair is thin and not too thick. But I have them!
All photos were taken in sunny windy weather on the balcony. The color is natural, dried naturally. The tips were cut last time for the New Year. It’s time to go again, but for now #stay home.
Someone may say that the hair would have recovered, because the stress is over. Unfortunately, this is not so. Firstly, I am still struggling with the consequences of what happened, respectively, to this day I am taking medications that lead to hair loss. Secondly, the recovery process took a very long time, I spent another year after a coma in the hospital and rehabilitation center. In general, I had enough stress.
Thanks for reading. Natasha shared the sad experience with you.
